Water Desalting

Water Desalting refers to the process of extracting or eliminating the salts dissolved in water for obtaining water supply (drinkable), irrigation or industrial purposes.

Desalting Techniques

Nowadays, we use Membrane Techniques, such as REVERSE OSMOSIS (R.O.), in order to desalt salt water or sea water.

The REVERSE OSMOSIS refers to the process of separating the salts by means of semi-permeable membranes, and it features that water passes through them and it also limits the passing of dissolved ions. The basics of REVERSE OSMOSIS consist of applying in a salty solution a higher pressure to its osmotic pressure in order to force water pass through a semi-permeable membrane, thus separating the salts contained in it.

As far as other desalting techniques are concerned, the REVERSE OSMOSIS plants have a lower energy use and more specifically during the last years and thanks to the ellaboration of low-consumption membranes, which allow us to work at very high pressures, something unthinkable 10 years ago.

Classification

Next, we divide WATER DESALTING in 2 large groups, according to the source water to be treated:

- Sea Water:

Due to the high concentration of salts, the performances during the desalting processes cannot be very high, working with perfomances around 40 and 60 %. Moreover, it is necessary to apply a great work pressure in order to obtain the permeate (desalted water).

- Salt Water:

This is the name that defines the wells which have been desalted for different purposes. The amount of dissolved salts in water is much lower in sea water, allowing us to work at low pressures which means a great financial and energy saving, thus obtaining a result in system conversions around 65 and 75 %.

Uses of Desalting

We can classify desalted water according to its final use in the following sections:

- Urban Uses

It includes the obtaining of drinkable water in order to supply areas with an increase in population and a decrease in the supply of drinkable water for human consumption derived from different causes.

- Tourist Uses

It is focused to supply hotel complexes and to irrigate golf courses in tourist locations where is difficult to obtain water for such purposes.

- Agricultural Uses

We aim to reduce the concentration of salts in the water of salty aquifers, mainly in the wells close to sea due to marine fouling.

- Industrial Uses

As a pre-treatment for obtaining ultrapure water to perform industrial manufacturing procedures (pharmaceutical products,...) and in hospitals.
